Hackney Area Guide

Our area guide to Hackney gives you a quick overview of the neighbourhood from its properties, public parks, local schools, council tax, public transport links to shopping and going out.

Postcodes covered by this area guide include E8, E9

Hackney is still better value for money than neighbouring Islington, and it still has a number of Victorian properties, alongside council-built tower blocks. The area has a diversity of cultural and entertainment offerings and remains very popular.

  • Property Types & Architecture

Though the area has more than its fair share of council housing, attractive Victorian terraces and converted apartments can still be found. Hackney has become an incredibly sought after place to live in recent years with its diverse selection of properties from Georgian and Victorian terraces interspersed with ex- local council properties and award-winning modern developments and warehouse conversions along the canal. The London Fields area is where the area's most sought after properties are found.

  • Shopping & Entertainment

Hackney is a place people fall in love with, it's edgy, artistic, innovative and exciting. The food scene is groundbreaking yet relaxed and is a popular destination for pop-up restaurants, artisan bakeries, food markets and coffee shops. If fashion is your fix then Hackney can happily deliver, a mecca for fashion designers, there are often pop-up ventures and interesting stores to browse, from vintage fabrics to designer must-haves. The fashion hub in Hackney Central houses a fashion outlet for brands such as Burberry, Aquascutum, Anya Hindmarch and many more. As well as fashion there is also the beautiful Frank Matcham-designed Hackney Empire theatre which shows a mix of comedy, opera, musicals, plays and community events. The Picturehouse across the street screens a mix of first-release and art house films.

  • Parks & Commons

Despite being so close to the City, Hackney also offers wonderful open spaces and parks including London Fields with its wildflower meadows, sports facilities, cafe, paddling pool and play areas, Hackney Marshes and Hackney Down with its space to cycle, helpful in an area full of cycling enthusiasts. For those who prefer to get wet, London Fields Lido is heated and open all year round. Nearby Victoria Park is also a local gem and a source of open space and local events all year round.

  • Who lives here?

Food and Art lovers flock to Hackney to immerse themselves in the area's buzzing vibe. The area has a wide appeal, and with strong transport links City workers as well as young families are attracted to life in Hackney. The area has a thriving artistic/bohemian community.
