Barbican Area Guide

Our area guide to Barbican gives you a quick overview of the neighbourhood from its properties, public parks, local schools, council tax, public transport links to shopping and going out.

Postcodes covered by this area guide include EC1Y, EC2Y

  • Property Types & Architecture

There is not a diverse range of properties in Barbican and it houses a residential estate called the Barbican Estate which is an example of Brutalist architecture much of which is Grade II listed. It was built in the 60's and 70's after extensive damage during World War II. The distinctive and sought-after residential estate consists of 3 main tower blocks as well as terrace blocks, mews and courts. They are grouped around a lake and green squares.

  • Shopping & Entertainment

The Barbican Estate also contains the Barbican Centre (the largest performing Arts Centre in Europe), the Barbican Public Library, the Museum of London, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama founded in 1880. The leading independent school, the City of London School for Girls is also situated there. There are several eateries and all day dining gastropubs and bars within the Barbican Centre and due to its central location, a wealth of places can be found nearby.

  • Parks & Commons

Not an area famed for its extensive parks, the Barbican's only green spaces sit within the Barbican Estate itself. However due to its central location, you are never more than a short journey away from a local park.

  • Who lives here?

Being one of the major cornerstones of London's cultural scene, it's not hard to see why this would be a great place for those that want to drink in the atmosphere 24/7 . Barbican is also very centrally located and has its own Tube Station. It is also very conveniently located for working in the financial districts in the City.
