Property Types & Architecture
Nine miles east of central London Barking was once a thriving fishing port until the mid-19th Century. Expansion during the 20's and 30's brought a good supply of larger homes to the area as well as smaller Victorian terraces closer to the town centre. Today, however, Barking is a town in the midst of change with an imaginative town centre scheme bringing architecturally designed brightly coloured flats as well as a 20 year plan to build thousands of homes and community facilities on Barking's 430-acre Riverside site.
Shopping & Entertainment
Barking hosts a general market from Tuesdays through to Saturdays to pick up some essentials, however for a more comprehensive high street shopping experience, head to nearby Lakeside shopping centre in West Thurrock or Westfield Stratford City, where a great range of eateries can also be found. Barking's Broadway Theatre is a performing arts centre and theatre and hosts a great range of plays, dance, music and drama for all ages. For those looking to take in a cultural experience Eastbury Manor (a National Trust property) is a great day out.
Parks & Commons
Barking has two fine parks —recently renovated Barking Park boasts a half-mile long lake and offers boating and bowls plus a miniature railway. Mayesbrook Park has two large lakes surrounded by woodland, creating a local nature reserve, plus football, cricket and baseball pitches and an outdoor gym.
