Formally part of the port of London and at one time the world's largest port. The contrast between new and historic buildings give Docklands a real quirky feel. With contemporary cutting edge architecture in new high rise developments and old dock buildings as well as a smattering of surviving Victorian terraced houses and former council properties there is something for everyone here.

Docklands is not renowned for its green spaces, but there are several parks with play areas for children and plenty of green spaces a short distance away. For that ''let's get out of the city'' feeling without the long drive, take the DLR to Mudchute Park, run by a charitable organisation. With over 32 acres of countryside and city farm there are many animals and a large range of activities for all ages. Greenwich Park, one of the 8 Royal Parks in London, boasts 180 acres of space filled with activities to suit everyone and nearby Victoria Park, one of London oldest and most historical parks, is visited by millions of visitors each year to enjoy the sports, play and relaxation offered. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in nearby Stratford is also a great place to let off steam.
