Property Types & Architecture
The area is made up mainly of Victorian terraced housing, much of which is very attractive and sought after. The garden squares of which there are many are particularly popular. Gibson Square, Cloudsley Square and Canonbury Square are good examples.
Duncan Terrace, just behind Camden Passage is one of the most prestigious areas partly because of its proximity to Angel Underground Station.
The Canonbury and Barnsbury area are also very popular. Canonbury, in particular has a quiet out of town atmosphere. A large area of N1 is comprised of council housing estates, particularly to the east of Essex Road -
Shopping & Entertainment
The main shopping area is around Islington High Street and Upper Street. There is a large Sainsbury’s supermarket on Liverpool Road. Islington is particularly known for its antique shops and stalls around Camden Passage. Chapel market is a popular street market just off Liverpool Road.
Upper street has become a major meeting place for young people for all over the London area an has a huge variety of bars and restaurants. Islington is particularly know for fringe theatre at well known venues such as the Kings Head, the Almeida and the Tower Theatre, Canonbury. There is also the Screen on the Green cinema opposite Islington Green. -
Parks & Commons
There are no large open spaces in N1, although Highbury Fields lies just to the north. Though Islington boosts many garden squares, some are open to the public.

The population of N1 is mixed. Nowadays it is mainly professional couples and families who have moved to the area, but there are still a large number of people on lower incomes
