New green initiative aims to encourage use of pay-as-you-go electric vehicles
A new Government initiative is making grants available for landlords to install electric vehicle chargers outside their properties.
The new initiative provides up to 75% of the cost towards the purchase and installation of a socket (up to £350 per time). The scheme is intended to increase usage of electric vehicles in the UK and is also likely to encourage the use of pay-as-you-go cars.
Increasingly, people are becoming users of cars rather than car owners, as the UK further accelerates its plans to reach Net-Zero emissions by 2050.
The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, which is providing the grants, must approve the installers. Landlords must also register beforehand at Companies House or be VAT-registered with HMRC. Landlords or agents of residential properties can apply for grants for up to 200 charge point sockets and a further 100 sockets for commercial properties each financial year.
Individuals cannot apply for their own place of residence or if the charge point is to be used by the public rather than tenants or staff. The scheme is eligible for owners of single-unit residential properties, multi-unit residential properties or commercially-let properties that have staff parking or parking for tenants. Applicants must also own the parking space.
The Government has pledged to commit to any grant claims made prior to any new public announcement should these change or if the plan is scrapped entirely.
Stephen Ludlow, Chairman at ludlowthompson says: “This initiative is an ideal way for landlords to help minimise their impact on the environment without a significant financial outlay.”
“As we move closer to 2050 and the Net Zero deadline, there will be increasing emphasis on what individuals can do to reduce their carbon footprint. Travelling by electric vehicle can have a significant impact.”
“Having access to electric charging points is likely to make rental properties stand out to environmentally conscious tenants, giving landlords a competitive edge.”

"My friend and I were lucky enough to have the ludlowthompson team show us around a lovely property in Bow. They were extremely knowledgeable and very friendly, making us feel relaxed and like we were already at home. We initially put an offer in and they helped us through the whole process. At very short notice, one of our parties pulled out of the application and they were very understanding and continued to offer their services to help us find another property. I look forward to continuing our search with ludlowthompson."
