I am a tenant living in rented accommodation, and have symptoms that could be Coronavirus - is there anything I need to do ? Do I need to tell anyone?
Coronavirus ( Covid 19) is identified as having symptoms of a dry cough, high temperature ( fever) and shortness of breath, though unlike colds and flu common this time of year it does not show the usual additional symptoms of a blocked or runny nose, sneezing & loss of taste and smell. ( It is noted that it takes 5 days for symptoms to start showing)
Government advice now notes ( Friday 13th March 2020) that should you demonstrate with these symptoms you should self-isolate in a bid to prevent & slow the spread of the virus. Everyone with flu-like symptoms ( defined as a fever above 37.8c or a persistent cough) should stay at home in self- isolation for at least 7 days.
What is Self-Isolation?
Self-isolation is a means of cutting yourself off from the rest of the world - and to do this you would need to stay at home, not go to work, school or other public places including avoiding public transport.
You may need help with groceries, shopping and medication - which you should ask friends,family or delivery drivers to drop off ( at your doorstep ) but you shouldnt have visitors.
What if I share a home with others ?
If you need to self-isolate and share a kitchen - avoid using it when others are in the house, take your meals to your own room to eat. Clean all surfaces with household cleaning products daily.
Limit contact with your housemates / family members as much as possible
Your housemates/ family members should wash their hands often, using soap and water for at least 20 seconds - and especially after any contact with someone self-isolating
Do not share towels, toiletries or other household items with someone self-isolating, and where possible use a separate bathroom. If that is not possible, the self-isolating person should use the bathroom last , cleaning thoroughly afterwards.
Any rubbish that the isolated person has been in contact with should be double bagged and kept - for separate disposal if testing positive for coronavirus
If I am self-isolating is there anyone I need to tell ?
If you have contractors due to attend your property to carry out repairs, inspections or safety checks you will need to advise them / your landlord/ property manager that you are self-isolating, in order that they can ensure precautions.
It is likely that the contractor visits will be re-arranged/ postponed in order for you to complete the self-isolation before they can visit your property. Keep in touch with them to rearrange suitable dates, and update them on progress so that things can be arranged as quickly as possible once your isolation is complete
Contractors, landlords and property managers need to support you in ensuring any repairs and health and safety checks are carried out, however should not be putting themselves or others with whom they work/ come into contact with at risk , so they will NOT be attending whilst you are self -isolating.
Be prepared for contractors to ask questions related to Coronavirus, such as if you have travelled overseas, or been in contact with anyone testing positive for the virus before they attend. It is likely you will be contacted to confirm the appointment and safety for the visit just before
