International event celebrates reclaiming the streets with parties and designated play streets
Communities across London came together to celebrate Car Free Day on Sunday 22nd September. Streets were temporarily closed to traffic throughout the city, as residents hosted street parties and other community events. Car Free Day, which is celebrated around the world, encourages residents to explore and enjoy the city without the use of a vehicle. As part of Car Free Day, 340 streets in 24 London boroughs were designated as safe play areas, with street parties taking place in 15 boroughs.
The scheme highlights the change of attitude in Londoners towards cars over the past decade, with an increasing number of people opting for the wide array of ‘always on’ modes of transport in the capital. Initiatives such as Cycle Super Highways have led to a 170% increase in daily bicycle journeys up from 270,000 in 1993 to 750,000 today
Many new developments have car-free restrictions attached to their planning conditions and this has only been made possible by investment in transport infrastructure. Indeed, the average Londoner has benefited from an infrastructure spend per head of £793 vs £368 for the rest of the UK.
In Lambeth 25 streets in areas including Herne Hill, Clapham, Brixton and Stockwell were closed off. The Fentiman and Richborne Residents’ Association, with the help of local volunteers, organised football matches and other games for children. Lambeth has celebrated Car Free Day for almost a decade.
