By 2021, most London MPs will be elected from areas where the majority of residents are renters.
Tenants are set to gain a stronger political voice as, by 2021, the majority of MPs in London will be elected from constituencies where most of the voters will be renting.
The rental population will therefore wield greater political influence as MPs campaign to appeal to their interests and priorities.
Stephen Ludlow, Chairman of ludlowthompson, explains: “Across London there has been a significant shift in favour of renting and greater numbers of London’s population join the rental market, they will become an increasingly important target group for politicians.
“Politicians will need to campaign on the issues that they feel will be vote winners with the larger population of tenants.
“The provision of high quality rental properties will move further up the political agenda. Buy-to-let investment over the last 15 years has been vital in dramatically improving the quality and choice of London rental homes. As renters' share of the vote increases, the continued improvement in London private rented sector will become a key issue for politicians.
"Many landlords see buy-to-let as an excellent investment opportunity and are looking to take advantage of the high demand. This investment is crucial to the capital’s economy and I would expect more and more politicians to recognise this.”
