It's National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, and tenants are being warned of dangers of post interception.
According to figures by 'Life Assistance' company, CPP, one in seven people have had post stolen for the purpose of identity fraud.
This can be a particular problem for tenants who move house more frequently, and fail to redirect mail to their new property.
Danny Harrison, identity theft expert states: “Fraudsters are using more sophisticated ways to steal personal details like the internet, but we mustn’t forget the more obvious methods like having your post stolen.
“To avoid falling victim it’s vital that people use the Royal Mail Redirection service for at least 12 months when they move to ensure important information does not go missing."
They suggest that up to 64% of the UK's 16 million tenants fail to inform their banks when changing address. But it is not only mail from banks that causes problems, as other post can also include personal information used by fraudsters.
Making a checklist could help prevent fraud; this could include:
- Student loan companies
- Catalogue/magazine subscriptions
- Health - Doctor/dentist/optician
- Veterinary doctor
- Inland Revenue
- Local Council
- Utilities providers
- Friends and family
- Insurance companies
- Credit card companies
Other fraudulent scams to gain personal details include emails seemingly from your credit card company, bank or even the HMRC. The recipient is invited to click on the email and update personal information. Many of the emails threaten action or consequences but the advise is never, ever to click on these emails. Even phone calls from financial providers and other organisations should always be vetted. Call the organisation back and if in doubt don't give information or sign up to good to be true offers; instead ask for it in writing.
Computer virus software packages are now responding to market demands with ID protection as offered by AVG.
