Embarrassment for Canadian Prime Minister's aide as dead cat sparks rumours of death of Margaret Thatcher.
The rumour of the death of Margaret Thatcher spread during a gala dinner for Canada's armed services.
Guests had reportedly received text messages reporting "Lady Thatcher has passed away", as word quickly spread through the hall, reaching Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.
Dimitri Soudas, aide to Mr Harper was instructed to confirm the news, and to begin preparing an official statement.
However, Mr Soudas was met with confusion when he was informed by contacts at Gordon Browns' office that, on the contrary, Mrs Thatcher was definitely still alive.
In fact, the Thatcher who had died turned out to be the beloved 16-year-old cat of Transport Minister, John Baird.
Mr Soudas said: "If the cat wasn't dead, I'd have killed it by now."
